What is Lagom Home Interior

What is Lagom & Why I Love It

In my last homeware post, I yapped on about how much I love the Danish way of living and how they incorporate ‘Hygge’ into their lives. But now, I’ve now found out that Lagom is Sweden’s answer to hygge. So I knew I had to look into it and let you know what I think!

My fiancé is Swedish, so I have visited Sweden a few times over the years and I have always admired their minimalistic way of living. From what I’ve learned, Lagom in Swedish means “just the right amount” and it’s about creating the right balance in life. The idea behind Lagom is all about moderation. It is based upon the act of self-discipline to help you enjoy a happier balance in life whilst establishing a more sustainable mindset.  In comparison to hygge which is more based on capturing a feeling (click here to read my Hygge post).

So how do you capture Lagom within home interior?

For home design, the idea of Lagom to keep it minimal and understated. There are limited furniture stores in Glasgow that offer high-quality, design led pieces with down-to-earth simplicity. BoConept, however, achieves just the right amount‘ (see what I did ? ) of this when it comes to home design.

When you are trying to recreate Lagom, remember to avoid cluttering. You can do this by eliminating anything that is unnecessary. Try focus on functionality with sleek, minimalistic and curated pieces. There is no need to over complicate things, the simpler the better. In my mood board below, a complimentary group of neutral colours are ideal as they provide elegance and simplicity. Yet with a touch of natural materials, i.e raw wood, natural linen fabrics and even some indoor plants can bring a real sense of homeyness to any room.

Also, drawing on the raw beauty of unfinished surfaces, Lagom is about making natural materials the star of the show. IKEA is the perfect place to visit if you are wanting to achieve this look because they sell certain pieces with just the raw materials for you to enjoy the craftsmanship of a piece of furniture. By adding some indoor plants can also bring more life to the room if you have opted for a muted colour palette. Plants are also good for removing pollutants and are also known to improve your sense well-being.

But even still, you don’t have to forget completely about colour. Even if you have bare walls and simple decor, you can add colour through the use of statement furniture pieces. I really love this navy sofa from BoConcept, it is simple yet it can entirely make up a room. But don’t use too many dark colours because it can have an adverse effect where it can make a space feel small. Again, thinking like a true Lagom enthusiast – use colour in moderation. Another key point to mention is to keep everything ‘clutter-free’ this will really help you embrace the true art of Lagom.

What what do you think of Lagom. Will you try it?
