A week in Copenhagen: where to eat & explore

My sister is a dancer and she was recently performing in the We Will Rock You show in Copenhagen. So her boyfriend David and I hopped on a flight to watch her perform, even though the show was in Danish I think I got the gist of the story! Her next gig is the UK tour of Flashdance so I’m buzzing for that and it will be in English which is even better.

I stayed in Copenhagen for a week and even though I felt like a polar bear living in the north pole (it was freezing) I totally fell in love with the Danish way of life. We stayed in Vesterbro which is basically like the Shoreditch of Copenhagen – it was really cool. I actually thought the prices would be similar to London but I was wrong, it’s even more expensive. They pay 40% tax so naturally everything is expensive, but they also have a really high living standard i.e short working days and high paid salaries. With amazing food, the renowned copenhagen escorts and the country itself being so well looked after, it comes as little surprise to see the Danes come first in the World Happiness Report as the happiest country after all. No wonder the hotels (like the d’angleterre) are so great! You never get good service in a country where everyone is miserable, but they’re all smiles here!

Places to Eat

The food in Copenhagen was honestly to die for, everything I got was just amazing. In all honesty, I would go back just for the food.

Copenhagen things to do

Mad & Kaffe

We were really lucky that this place was literally around the corner from my sister’s flat. It is known for its popular brunch menu and it is probably the most instagrammable place ever. They offer mini brunch tapas and the menu has everything! When you sit down you are given a list of food and a pencil. You then tick of which food you would like and give it to the waiter. The only thing is that because its so popular there is a long waiting list, we had to wait over an hour for a table which was quite annoying.

Vestebro’s Meatpacking District

The Vesterbro meat packing district is filled with great places to eat. They also have some really awesome places. We weren’t here in summer, so the outside stalls hadn’t opened yet but there were some really great restaurants that we tried.

Mother

Omg Mother. This place has the best pizza ever, it was honesty sooooo good. All the pizzas are made from scratch. So there is quite a long wait but you are served with fresh pizza straight from the oven so I’m not complaining. I would rate them an 8/10, a must visit place if you’re a big pizza fan.

Tommis burger joint

This place was pretty good, I probably wouldn’t say it’s the best burger joint I’ve tried but it was OK. So I would probably rate them around a 6/10 just because it wasn’t amazing.

Prolog coffee shop

This place was awesome, it’s a real coffee shop. You won’t get your Starbucks caramel frappuccino, but they make real coffee. You get to see them make it from scratch it’s actually really satisfying to just sit and watch them experiment with the coffee. If you love coffee you will definitely appreciate this place, I would rate them 9/10.

Paper Island

Copenhagen Things to Do

This place HAS to be on your list if you’re visiting Copenhagen. It is a street food market which has every single type of food imaginable. I, personally, was first to the Chinese food stall and I ordered duck and noodles, it was definitely the best I’d tried – I couldn’t get enough of the sauce and you get massive portions!

Where to Explore

Strøget shopping street

This is the largest shopping street in Copenhagen. If you are looking for some good high street shopping this is definitely the place to visit. A lot of the brands are similar to the UK to be fair there’s not much of a difference but I loved how they had a massive Tiger, I got a few homeware items from there because it was actually really well priced.

Copenhagen things to do

Freetown Christiania

At first, David and I were like this place is sketchy as hell. You aren’t allowed to take pictures (I did because I’m a crazy cat) but I was pretty intimidated, it’s the only place in Copenhagen where the police aren’t allowed. So people sell weed freely and everything is tax-free. After first impressions, we actually found a really cool pub where we ended up having a few beers and it was tax-free so much cheaper than prices in the city center. I would definitely say it is a place worth a visit, there is a lot of cool stalls for souvenirs and jewellery and sometimes they even sell art outside. I reckon during the summer there would be much more going on.

Tivoli Gardens

Tivoli was probably my favourite place. It is basically an amusement park in the middle of the city center. There are lots of things to do there restaurants, bars, coffee shops, gardens and rides. It cost us around 100DKK which is about £12 for the entrance fee. You can then pay more if you want to have access to the rides. We got some burgers in the Woodhouse Cafe which was really nice. But I also got some really nice pictures here too you can see my instagram to see more!

Nyhaven

This is the place to be if it’s sunny outside. It is a street next to a canal filled with lots of bars and restaurants with really nice outdoor seating areas. When we went it was really cold so we didn’t stay for long, but if it was sunnier I would have definitely have got on one of the boats for a sail with some cocktails along the canal.
